British Designer Faye Toogood Has Teamed Up With Birkenstock online for a New Line of Footwear and Furniture

“I love how an idea can flow from fashion to shoes, through to art and furniture,” says British-based designer Faye Toogood, whose multidisciplinary vision has permeated her brand since the very beginning. Beyond her cult-status Roly-Poly chair, Toogood’s practice has grown to include homeware, interior design, fine art, and fashion.

When asked how her collaboration with Birkenstock came about, the designer mentioned she had long been a fan of the sandals, wearing them on her feet as a small child growing up on the English countryside. Nowadays, she admires the brand equally from a professional perspective, acknowledging their shared commitment to high-quality, natural, and sustainable materials, as well as timeless designs.

When designing the sandals, “the key was to keep the classic Birkenstock shoe base of high quality cork and leather, and then create sculptural and puffy shapes that were recognizably Toogood,” said the designer. The resulting shoe is utilitarian, with the strong, yet simple form that Birkenstock is known for, perfectly complemented by Toogood’s playful twists in the details. Presented in three names—Mudlark, Beachcomber, and Forager—the sandals, along with the entire collection, are inspired by early man-made artifacts and the idea of these ancient pieces becoming sculptural objects, reflected through bold forms and natural colors.

The bed, like the shoes, has a similar sculptural quality, evoking the same playful and tubular style that has come to define Toogood’s designs. “I took the sandals’ visual language and amplified it into a large-scale product that was directed by both shape and sleep technology,” said the designer, who took a characteristically holistic approach to the creative collaboration. Birkenstock, which has long made sure that quality and comfort are central to its products, applied the same functionality in the shoe design to that of the bed. The footwear company drew directly from its timelessly comfortable cork sandal base, made to promote posture and standing, and applied it to the mattress, in order to promote lying and sleeping. The bed also features all of Birkenstocks other signature materials, including cork, leather, and canvas.

The rest of the collection includes a selection of workwear to complement the sandals, with a neutral color palette, meant to lend a focus to the striking forms, textures, and silhouettes, featured throughout. Despite both Toogood and Birkenstock's very clear brand identities, the two managed to harmonize in a way that captured both of their strong visions and styles quite clearly. “Birkenstock and Toogood is a combination of genuine craftsmanship and uncompromising quality,” says Birkenstock's CEO Oliver Reichert. “The unique take and talent of Faye Toogood creates a whole new version of our iconic designs.”

As of tomorrow, the collection is available online at birkenstock outlet store, as well as birkenstock online. The bed will be available upon request exclusively at birkenstock sandals sale.
